Voyage Dallas: Inspiring Conversations with Terri Becker

Updated: Dec 3, 2021

Today we’d like to introduce you to Terri Becker.

Hi Terri, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

Hi there! I am so happy you are here! I would love to introduce me and my happy little clan.

My name is Terri Becker, a passionate designer of all things! At least, that is how I feel in my lil’ Texas heart.

I am an interior designer and the proud owner of Terri Becker Designs, a boutique Dallas design and remodeling firm. I specialize in residential and commercial transformations around DFW.

I have been doing interior design professionally for eight years. But non-professionally, I have been doing design all my life. Growing up, I would rearrange my room in the middle of the night, my family would be amazed that I could manage that all my myself and dramatically change my room overnight. I should have known then that it was what I meant to do! Sadly, it took me until my 30s to realize the dream of doing interior design as a business.

I have done a lot of projects at this point. I have tackled big full home transformations, as well as lots of media rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, bedroom remodels and outdoor remodels where the before-and-afters are breathtaking!

2020 has been a powerful year for me! My Winning the 2020 ASID Dallas Ovation Awards and then #1 for Outdoor Living for the ASID Celebrating Texas Design Competition was overwhelming, I am truly honored to be standing among such talented designers and doing something I love! I was also awarded best of Houzz in 2019 and 2020. first feature was in the winter issue of Dallas Style and Design!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?

Interior Design is my second career. I was in corporate America for about 20 years. And hated it, to be honest. I did well and had the chance to move up, do a lot and work for some big companies but hated that there was not any creativity in it. When I was going through a divorce eight years ago, I was considering going back to corporate to pay the bills. I had a toddler at the time and loved being a stay-at-home mom and juggling two small businesses.

Thankfully, a friend of mine convinced me to remodel their home after seeing the renovations I had done on my own home. I fell in love with it! I decided then that no matter what I needed to make this my life; I would do. I enrolled in design school and started my own business at the same time. I have been doing design ever since. I have never been happier. Design is my passion, and it is always on my mind. I could not be happier with the career change! Loving what you do is a blessed placed of bliss – it really is.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

My process is all about the client. My first step is about feeling out what they are wanting and then figuring out how to make it that bigger and better than they could have dreamed. Sitting down with clients and talking with them about how they want to feel in their new space, what works for them and what does not. Seeing what inspires them. Then I go to work. That’s the fun stuff. It takes over my thoughts and it is all I can think of! One client gave me the best compliment by saying, “How did you get inside my head and figure out what I wanted without telling you? You gave me everything I could have wanted and then gave me more. You gave me more ME but far better than I could have imagined.”

I am a small boutique remodeling firm, so I hire out all the talent to make the project a reality. I really enjoy bringing in local artists when possible. I think one of the things that is unique to my design is that it is different, fresh, and out of the box. Just this week I have two new clients that were referrals from people in the industry. Which is a total honor! But the thing that really makes my heart smile is both people thought of me for the client because the clients were artistic and out of the box, lots of fun. They were looking for a unique design. These are my people! And what an honor that I would be the person they would suggest.

What matters most to you?

My daughter first and foremost. My daughter Kora, aka “Rockstar,” is 11 years old and my design-assistant-in-training. We adopted our awesome buddy Lucky last year from Operation Kindness and just got Harley, an adorable miniature Australian Shepherd to finish the pack. We love to craft, make art, spend time in nature, and be silly together. She is a hoot! I plan to incorporate her perspective for some kid DIY crafts that are fun on my blog.

I personally enjoy unconventional DIY challenges, like saving items from the trash and making them glorious again. I also love cooking and entertaining, and fashion and music. In future blogs, I plan to touch on all these areas. I also will give you fun videos, how to posts, and lots of design inspiration. We enjoy traveling, being outdoors, camping, hiking, swimming, stargazing. I have a firepit in the backyard that I light all year round. To me, there is nothing like being in mother nature. I also enjoy painting, making jewelry, reading, cooking, going to the movies.

I hope you join us on our adventures to see what we are up to next! Thank you so much for your time.
